1. 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗜 𝗗𝗢 𝗧𝗢 𝗛𝗘𝗟𝗣?
Many people ask what they can do to support Save Kilburn & Horsley’s Green Belt. Thanks to the incredible response from the community, we currently have the objections and funds we need.

Right now, the most helpful things are simple

• 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱 by following this group
• 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘂𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 with friends and neighbours
• 𝗔𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 such as the Spring Walk for the Green Belt on 18 April
• Help 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 locally

A visible, engaged community matters. 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻-𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁.

2. 𝗔𝗠𝗕𝗘𝗥 𝗩𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗬 𝗕𝗢𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗚𝗛 𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗖𝗜𝗟 - 𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗘𝗡 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗬 𝗕𝗘𝗟𝗧 𝗥𝗘𝗩𝗜𝗘𝗪
Amber Valley Borough Council has begun a 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝘆 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 - a key piece of work that will shape how Green Belt land across the borough is identified, assessed and categorised.

This process will inform decisions on whether land remains protected, is amended, or is 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, and will play a central role in preparing the next Local Plan.

A methodology document has been produced, but has not been issued for public consultation. SKHGB became aware of it via local parish councils and was invited to provide comments.

3. 𝗦𝗔𝗟𝗠𝗢𝗡 𝗜𝗡 𝗕𝗢𝗧𝗧𝗟𝗘 𝗕𝗥𝗢𝗢𝗞
In case you didn’t see the news, a 𝗷𝘂𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝘁𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗸 near Little Eaton - a remarkable and encouraging milestone for local biodiversity.

However, this positive development also highlights 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀.

Firstly, the potential impact on Bottle Brook if 200 new houses are built without significant upgrades to wastewater infrastructure. Wheeldon’s own Flood Risk Assessment & Drainage Strategy states that, if a sewer connection is not pursued, discharge may instead be directed to a culverted watercourse which ultimately 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗕𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗸.

Floodmapper data shows that between 2021 and 2024 there were 72 sewage discharge events into Bottle Brook, totalling 𝟮𝟰𝟳.𝟮 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 of pollution. 𝗔𝗻𝘆 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘀 𝗳𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲.

Secondly, the long-standing issue of 𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Salmon are highly sensitive to water quality, and ochre presents a significant threat. Formed from iron-rich mine water associated with historic coal workings, it creates fine orange sediments that settle on the riverbed. These sediments can smother spawning gravels, reduce oxygen levels for eggs and juveniles, clog fish gills, and damage the invertebrate populations that salmon depend on for food.

Even relatively low levels of ochre can undermine the fragile re-establishment of salmon in streams like Bottle Brook, making effective management of mine water drainage essential if this early sign of ecological recovery is to be sustained.

We have submitted a 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗕𝗼𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 in relation to the proposed housing development. The ochre issue is more complex and long-standing, and we are aware that local parish councils have been working for many years to identify solutions.
